Future work organizations: Perspectives Issues and Challenges held on 28th to 30th December 2017 was the first International conference organized by Sona School of Management.
In response to the call for papers a total of 130 abstracts were received from 9 foreign countries – USA, Australia, UK, Canada, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Malaysia, UAE and 17 states of India. The Review team through its rigorous evaluation process selected the abstracts and the final papers for presentation. The criteria used for evaluating were, the relevance of the title to the theme of the conference, significance of the concept and the theory used, methodological contributions, appropriateness of the literature review, analysis, discussion of the findings and its implication to academicians, practitioners and scholars. Around 125 participants representing from 9 different countries attended the 2 day conference conference. Doctoral Colloquium,a pre-conference workshop was organized on 28th Dec 2017.The conference was supported by the conference partners Goa University, AMDISA, McGrawHill and Proquest.
During the Inaugural session on 29th Dec,2017, Prof. S.P. Thenmozhi, Convenor of the conference welcomed the participants representing from 9 foreign countries and 17 states of India.The conference was inaugurated by Mr. Choko Valliappa, Founder and CEO – Vee Technologies, Bengaluru and Vice Chairman Sona Group of Institutions, Salem. His message conveyed the way technology and innovation has created the revolution in the automobile industry, health sector, space management, waste management, water management and the way it led to disappearance of jobs like the drivers, tellers, typists etc. He spoke about the changing phase from dependent managers to independent managers and now moving to interdependent managers for the future. Prof. Swarup K. Mohanty, Conference Director explained the conference theme and briefed on the need to blend technology, workforce and appropriate leadership to lead the Future organisations.
Prof. Kishore Kulkarni from Metropolitan State University of Denver, USA delivered the key note address. He enlightened the participants on the economic challenges and economic recession that is likely to happen with technological developments leading to future work organizations.
Prof. K.B. Akilesh, Senior Professor, IISc, Bengaluru, in his address told that the emerging industries would require new jobs, skills and competencies which would differ from that of the existing ones. The exploration of such skill sets and developing the competencies for human workforce is the need of the day.
An MOU was signed between Sona College of Technology, India and Daffodils University, Bangladesh. The Director of Sona School of Management,Prof. Swarup K. Mohanty, Mr. Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona College of Technology, Salem, India and Mr.Sabur Khan, Chairman, Daffodils University exchanged the MOU and the flags.
Another MOU was signed between Sona College of Technology, India and Metropolitan State University of Denver, USA at a preliminary level with special focus to student exchange.
The first Panel Discussion was on the topic ‘Future Workforce’ .The panel speakers were Prof Nikunj Dalal, Oklahoma State University, USA, Mr.Samantha Rathnayake, Management Consultant, PIM, Srilanka, Prof.K.B. Akhilesh, DOMS, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and Mr. ChockoValliappa, Founder &CEO Vee Technologies, Bengaluru. Prof.K.B. Akhilesh moderated the discussion. He concluded that in future, there will be changes in the jobs, the work force and technology and future managers need to be machine managers.
This was followed by the second Panel Discussion on the topic ‘New Age Future Leaders’. The panel speakers were Mr. Somick Goswami, Partner, Price Water House Coopers, India;Prof. DebuMukerji, Management Consultant, Sydney; Ms.SaiKavitha VP & Country Head, Innovatia, Canada & India; Prof Swarup K Mohanty, Director, Sona School of Management, Salem; Prof Anil Rao Paila, President-AIMS & Sr. Dean, Welingkar, Institute of Management, Bengaluru and Mr. Sabur Khan, Chairman, Daffodil International University, Bangladesh. Prof Swarup K Mohanty took the lead as the moderator for the panel discussion. He concluded that the future leaders need to be focused on Entrepreneurial qualities, Emotional Intelligence and Empowerment and emphasized that future leaders need to shift from Emotional Intelligence to Intelligent Learners.This was followed by Paper presentations in Technical Sessions.
The Second day of the conference commenced with the Keynote address by Prof. S.Padam, Ex-Dean, ASCI, Hyderabad. He enlightened the audience on how globalization and nationalism, emerging choice of leader and leadership, neutralizing impact of technology, building organisations into institutions and human factor would determine the future organisations. The future organizations would witness the challenge of human factor particularly in the productivity of people in knowledge industry. To sustain in future, organisations need to be transparent, have well laid down rules and delegate work, he said.
This was followed by the third Panel discussion on the topic ‘Future Organizations’. The panel speakers were Prof. Subhash Sharma, Director ,Indus Business Academy, Bengaluru; Dr. GourGobindaGoswami, Treasurer, North South University, Bangladesh ; Prof.Jayanthi Ranjan, IMT Gazhiabad and Prof. S .Padam, Post Doc (MIT, USA), Ex Dean- ASCI, Hyderabad. Prof. Subhash Sharma was the moderator for the session.The panel identified the forces that would influence the future organizations, namely force of market, force of state and force of people. In the VUCA context the managers and leaders have to evolve as corporate MGR-Mentor, Guru, Rishi. The panel concluded that in future demand driven organisations and digitally enabled systems will take over.
During the conference 61 papers were presented under 5 different tracks on the conference themes. Each track presentation had a valuable question and answer session, facilitating exchange of ideas and knowledge followed by concluding remarks by the session chair.
